چکیده

Defending first-person introspective access to own mental states, we argue against Carruthers’ claim of mindreading being prior to meta-cognition and for a fundamental difference between how we understand our own and others’ mental states. We conclude that a model based on one mechanism but involving two different kinds of access for self and other is sufficient and more consistent with the

Forthcoming in Philosophy and Phenomenological Research Introspection: Divided and Partly Eliminated

This paper will argue that there is no such thing as introspective access to judgments and decisions. It won’t challenge the existence of introspective access to perceptual and imagistic states, nor to emotional feelings and bodily sensations. On the contrary, the model presented in Section 2 presumes such access. Hence introspection is here divided into two categories: introspection of proposi...

Introspective classification for robot perception

In robotics, the use of a classification framework which produces scores with inappropriate confidences will ultimately lead to the robot making dangerous decisions. In order to select a framework which will make the best decisions, we should pay careful attention to the ways in which it generates scores. Precision and recall have been widely adopted as canonical metrics to quantify the perform...

The effect of introspection on judgment and decision making is dependent on the quality of conscious thinking.

That introspection may impair certain judgments and result in fabrication has been attributed to a distracting shift from more adaptive intuitive processing to more analytic and conscious processing. This phenomenon was studied in an experiment where participants made multidimensional visual choices. It was found that the effect of this shift on decision-making performance was dependent on the ...

Making GUIs Narcissistic: Toolkit for Managing Space and Occlusion by Visual Introspection

Effective use of screen space and reduction of occlusion are important for usability. We present a toolkit to help a GUI manage space and occlusion by visual introspection. Rather than relying on a GUI’s internal model, our toolkit inspects a GUI’s visual appearance at the screen pixel level and computes maps to describe the GUI’s space and occlusion distribution. Moreover, we compare a GUI’s e...
